England’s Henry Moore
Synopsis
England’s Henry Moore is a feature length documentary made for Channel 4, UK, in 1988. It is an exploration of an artist and of history. The witnesses to Moore’s life and work come from deep within both his creative experience and the collective experience of Great Britain. The man who traveled with Moore to sign up as a volunteer for the First World War; Moore’s college friends; his first girlfriend; those who worked with him. These give the film its remarkable sense of intimacy. Then there are the public men and women who knew Moore as an iconic national figure - Stephen Spender, Lord Callagahan, Helmud Schmidt, Kenneth Clarke. And those who bear witness to the way Moore has been at the heart of British experience - the man who moved into the house where he had lived as a child, his assistant, his secretary.
